What is Starlink?

Starlink is the world’s first and largest satellite constellation using a low Earth orbit to deliver broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, video calls and more. Leveraging advanced satellites and user hardware coupled with Starlink’s deep experience with both spacecraft and on-orbit operations, Starlink delivers high-speed, low-latency internet to users all over the world.

How Starlink Works

Most satellite internet services come from single geostationary satellites that orbit the planet at 35,786 km. As a result, the round-trip data time between the user and satellite, also known as latency, is high, making it nearly impossible to support streaming, online gaming, video calls or other high data rate activities.

Starlink is a constellation of thousands of satellites that orbit the planet much closer to Earth, at about 550km, and cover the entire globe. Because Starlink satellites are in a low orbit, latency is significantly lower, around 25 – 60 ms vs 600+ ms.

FAQ's about Starlink Business

Yes, Starlink Business is designed to provide reliable and high-performance internet connectivity. It is suitable for various business applications, including video conferencing, cloud services, and other mission-critical tasks.

Starlink Business offers the advantage of high-speed internet access even in remote or underserved areas. It provides a reliable and low-latency connection, making it suitable for businesses that require consistent and fast internet for their operations.

Brdy may offer additional support services tailored to businesses. It’s recommended to check with Brdy for specific details on support options available for Starlink Business customers.

Starlink Business is designed to scale with the needs of your business. You can explore different plans and options to accommodate the growing demands for internet connectivity as your business expands.

Starlink Business is a service provided by Brdy UK, offering high-speed, low-latency satellite internet to businesses. While it shares the same technology as the residential service, business plans may include additional features tailored to meet the connectivity needs of businesses.

Starlink for Mobility offers the Mobile Priority service plans and the Flat Higher Performance Starlink for customers with critical in-motion connectivity needs. This offering is ideal for mobile businesses and public sector use cases, including emergency response, trucking, buses, shuttles, mobile health clinics, and news broadcasting.

Maritime service is very similar to land service.  However, there are extra systems to ensure satellites know to communicate with a vessel as it moves into new patches of the ocean.

Mobile Priority (available on “Boats”, “Mobility” and “Maritime”) service plans are designated for in-motion use with Flat High Performance Starlink.

Mobile Regional and Mobile Global (available on “Roam” and “Maritime”) service plan users will have the ability to opt in to Mobile Priority data as you need it on a per GB basis in order to use designated Starlink hardware in motion. In-motion use of Mobile Data is limited to less than 10mph.

Approved Hardware for in-motion use:

Flat High Performance

Note: Flat High Performance Starlink is only available to be purchased in certain regions. If your account country is outside these regions, you can use your current Starlink hardware paired with the Mobile Priority data to access prioritized service globally on land and in the ocean while stationary. Customers using a Starlink that is not the Flat High Performance Starlink in motion do so at their own risk; equipment falling onto the road or off a vessel due to poor installation practices can cause serious accidents resulting in bodily injury or damage to property. Damage to the Starlink while in motion may result in a void of your Starlink warranty.

Mobile Priority data is required for ocean use.

The Mobile Priority service plan enables our fastest network speeds for consumers and can be used on the ocean and land, and is available in 50GB, 1TB, and 5TB plans.

Starting May 2023, If you exceed the allotted data on your Mobile Priority plan and have not opted in to additional Mobile Priority data, you will be unable to access the internet while on the ocean except to access your Starlink account. You will continue to have unlimited Mobile service on inland coverage (e.g., lakes, rivers). Opt-in to automatically purchase additional Mobile Priority Data by the GB to maintain connectivity on the ocean at our fastest network speeds.

If you are on the Global or Regional Mobile service plans (Roam) you will need to opt-in to Mobile Priority data or change your service plan to Mobile Priority (where available) to use Starlink on the ocean.

Movement of the vessel has little effect on connection quality, unless the motion is significant enough to point the antenna away from the sky.

The Starlink specs below include the Starlink, WiFi router, power supply, and cables.

Starlink Standard Actuated power specifications:

Average: 50-75W

Idle: 20W

Starlink Standard power specifications:

Average: 75-100 W

Idle: 20W

High Performance and Flat High Performance power specifications:

Average: 110-150W

Idle: 45W

The power utilization can vary depending on the temperature, location, and utilization of the Starlink.

Note that the specs are based on AC input power averages. The power utilization can vary depending on the temperature, location, and utilization of the Starlink. Starlink for RVs does not come with a mobile power source (e.g., generator).

The Starlink dish and power supply are water jet and dust resistant. The dish and power supply have a rating of IP56.

The Starlink WiFi router is designed for indoor use. It is dust and splash resistant with a rating of IP54.

Starlink provides two IP policies, “default” and “public”. The default IP configuration is Carrier Grade Network Address Translation (CGNAT) using private address space assigned to Starlink clients with DHCP from the 100.64.0.0/10 network. Network Address Translation (NAT) translates between Starlink private and public IPs.

The Starlink public IP policy is an optional configuration available to Priority and Mobile Priority customers. A public IP is reachable from any device on the internet and is assigned to Starlink network clients using DHCP. While we do not provide a static IP option at this time, we utilize a reservation system so that the public IP address is reserved even when your Starlink is turned off or rebooted. Our system is dynamic where moving the Starlink to another location and Starlink software updates may cause the public IP to change. Starlink does not currently offer the ability for Standard or Mobile customers to receive a public IP. The public IP option can be enabled from the account dashboard. See instructions here.

Each Starlink is allocated one IPv4 address and delegated a /56 IPv6 prefix for network clients. All Starlink network clients are assigned an IPv6 address. IPv6 is supported on all Starlink routers.

The default IP policy using CGNAT blocks all inbound ports. Customers requiring inbound ports should consider products with a public IP option. The following outbound ports are blocked for all customers per information security best practices: TCP/25 (SMTP) and TCP/445 (SMB).

As Starlink continues to expand and upgrade our global internet service infrastructure and rollout new capabilities, some users may see different IP address behaviour (for example, publicly routable addresses, IPv6, non-CGNAT).

Coastal Waters: Starlink for maritime use should only be used in territorial waters where licensing is either held by SpaceX or the end user.

FCC Authorization Notice: Federal Communication Commission authorization to Starlink for in-motion services in the United States has been granted on a non-interference protected basis, i.e., unprotected basis with respect to operations in the 12.2-12.7 GHz band. Therefore, Starlink’s in-motion operations, including for vessels, must accept any interference received from both current and future services authorized in the band – even if such interference causes undesirable operations for Starlink Services and its customers. Starlink in-motion Services must not cause harmful interference to any authorized service in the band, whether licensed or not.

Land: All areas labelled as “Available”, “Waitlist”, or “Coming Soon” on the Starlink Availability Map are considered land regions. Regional Mobile plans can be used on land within your continent (see continent map), while Global Mobile plans can be used on land anywhere Starlink has service around the world.

Ocean: All areas coloured as black on the Starlink Availability Map are considered ocean regions, including islands unless they are labelled “Available”, “Waitlist”, or “Coming Soon”. Only Mobile Priority Data can be used on the ocean, including on these unlabelled islands. Use in local territorial waters, is contingent on government approval.

Starlink is available for use in international waters around the globe with applicable service plans. Coverage in local territorial waters and in motion for land is contingent on government approval.
