Satellite Broadband 101
How satellite broadband works and what it can do for you
You may have heard of satellite broadband, but you may still have questions about what it is, or how it works. There’s a lot of information out there about satellite broadband, but much is out of date or incorrect. Here we’ll bust the myths and separate the fact from the fiction to give you the real lowdown on the technology that keeps rural areas connected.
How does satellite broadband work?
Satellite broadband is a bit like satellite TV – but with a two-way connection. You send data to one of the 1,000’s of satellites orbiting 35000 kilometers above us, and they send data back to help you do whatever you need to do online. Brdy uses geostationary satellites, meaning they move at the same speed as earth’s rotation, staying in place to deliver your broadband.
The first internet-ready satellite was launched in 2003, but speeds were slow, and connections unreliable at best. In the last 10 years, the technology has come on in leaps and bounds with Brdy at the forefront of the satellite broadband revolution having worked with all of the major satellite operators since launching (as Satellite Solutions) over a decade ago.

FAQ: How does the satellite connection reach my home?
Via a satellite dish on your property, connected to a router in your house, which can be installed by one of our engineers, or alternatively, you can do this yourself or with the help of a local installer.
What can you do with a satellite connection?
Satellite broadband is the ideal solution for rural living, where cabled broadband simply isn’t an option. With speeds of up to 50 Mbps, your online world will open up; meaning you can video chat with a friend, treat yourself to something new or stream your latest Netflix obsession.
FAQ: How can I watch Netflix without any disruptions?
While satellite broadband can support streaming, we recommend only having one device online at once while watching streaming services such as Netflix and choosing to watch in standard resolution rather than 4K/ HD. Alternatively, download your favourite shows first, for 100% uninterrupted viewing. Top tip: downloading overnight will not eat into your priority data.
Love your rural life
We know you probably chose your home because of the beautiful location, peaceful surroundings, or proximity to nature. Even so, you shouldn’t have to compromise on staying connected. Satellite broadband gives you the best of both worlds – a good internet connection, in the most remote of areas across Europe and the UK.
FAQ: I don’t have a phoneline, can you still connect me?
As satellite broadband works via satellites, there’s no need for a landline. We don’t rely on you having an existing phone line, the internet reaches you from space, not via existing cables running into your home.
What’s next for satellite broadband?
Satellite broadband technology is evolving all the time. We are immensely proud that we are delivering on our mission to help millions of people all over the world enjoy better broadband connections but we’re always wanting to do more and deliver an even better service. Huge strides have already been made to reduce the latency (lag) that can be experienced by users of satellite internet by changing the way data is packaged when it is sent to and from the satellite. With new satellites that offer speeds up to 100 Mbps about to enter the market, we expect satellite broadband to become much more common in the future.
FAQ: Will I be able to play online gaming in the future?
With advancements in satellite broadband technology, we hope to be able to provide connections in the near future that will support online gaming.
So there you have it – satellite broadband in a nutshell. Hopefully we’ve cleared up any questions, busted a few myths, and given you some food for thought on your own broadband solution.
